The Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association announced today that the current chairman, Akio Toyoda, will step down at the end of this year, and will be succeeded by the current vice chairman and Isuzu Motors chairman and CEO, Masaru Yamaki, as the next chairman. This appointment will take effect on January 1, 2024. It is worth noting that prior to this, the position of JAMA chairman was held by the president or chairman of the “Big Three” Japanese automakers, with each serving a two-year term. Toyoda briefly served as JAMA chairman from 2012 to 2014, and was re-elected in May 2018, serving for six years.

The association was established in 1967 and is headquartered in Tokyo. It was formed by the merger of the former Automobile Industry Association and the Japan Mini Vehicles Association, and in 2002, it merged with the Automobile Industry Promotion Association and the Automobile Industry Management Alliance. Currently, the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association is composed of 14 production companies. The association’s members include 14 production companies that produce passenger cars, trucks, buses, motorcycles, and other motor vehicles in Japan. These companies are Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Suzuki, Isuzu, Subaru, Hino, Daihatsu, Mitsubishi Fuso Bus Manufacturing, Yamaha Motor, UD Trucks, and Kawasaki.
