BMW Group's 2023 Success in China: Electric Car Sales Surge and Market Dominance

In 2023, BMW’s electric vehicle sales were strong, with a total of 99,972 units delivered throughout the year, representing a year-over-year growth of over 138%. In November and December of last year, BMW’s electric vehicles achieved monthly sales of over 10,000 units for two consecutive months. In 2023, BMW had a total of 6 electric vehicle models available in China, with the BMW i3 and BMW iX3 being the top two best-selling electric products. The innovative all-electric BMW i5 will officially be launched this month, marking BMW’s most successful models in China entering the era of intelligent electric vehicles, covering all major market segments. In the electrification transformation, intelligent technology and digitalization are important factors in attracting consumers. To better meet the digital needs of Chinese customers, BMW comprehensively upgraded its research and development system in China in 2023, leveraging China’s strength to promote digital research and development. In terms of intelligent driving, BMW has obtained a license to conduct L3 high-speed highway autonomous driving road tests, aiming to develop autonomous driving systems with the highest level of safety standards and introduce L3 level autonomous driving functions to the Chinese market at the appropriate time. With the rise of the green economy and the increasing prevalence of sustainable concepts, consumers are paying increasing attention to environmental and climate issues. According to BMW, simply relying on electric vehicles to reduce carbon emissions during driving is not enough. BMW’s goal is to provide a “green electric vehicle” that achieves carbon reduction and emission reduction throughout the entire industry chain. Currently, all BMW electric vehicles are produced using “green electricity,” and the power batteries carried on the vehicles will be able to achieve closed-loop recycling of raw materials after retirement, saving resources and reducing environmental impact. The rapid growth of China’s new energy vehicle sales has further increased demand for charging and energy replenishment facilities. By the end of 2023, BMW’s public charging network will have access to over 580,000 public charging piles nationwide, covering more than 320 cities. In August last year, BMW also launched the BMW Super Charging Station project, with high-power charging piles supporting up to 600 kilowatts of charging power. By the end of 2023, 50 stations have been built, covering 17 first- and second-tier cities in China, and are open to all brands of electric vehicles. In the global market, the BMW Group delivered a total of 2,555,341 BMW, MINI, and Rolls-Royce brand vehicles in 2023. Among them, BMW brand sales reached 2,253,835 vehicles, maintaining its position as the top luxury car in the global luxury car segment. Sales of BMW pure electric models increased by 92.2% year-on-year, reaching 330,596 vehicles.
