The all-new BMW 5 Series will officially debut in the market at the end of January, offering Chinese users a high-quality luxury travel experience with benchmark intelligent luxury. The new car not only features groundbreaking design and intelligent, luxurious, and comfortable features comparable to flagship models in its class, but also comes with features such as synchronous electric motor, 9th generation lateral dynamics management system, and 2nd generation integrated brake system, showcasing BMW’s iconic pure driving pleasure and intelligent driving assistance functions that resonate with people’s hearts. It also fully demonstrates BMW’s concept and latest achievements in the field of sustainable development.
BMW sets the benchmark for driving pleasure, even in the electric age. Whether hybrid or electric, BMW’s pursuit represents unique driving enjoyment, not just a combination of materials and data, but also the integration and tuning of exclusive BMW systems.
The innovative all-electric BMW i5 applies the fifth generation BMW eDrive electric drive system. The excitation synchronous motor is developed by BMW, highly integrated, modular, and sustainable, with sustained peak power, and superior acceleration performance in the full speed range, especially in the mid to high speed range, compared to permanent magnet synchronous motors. The electric motor brush module adopts exclusive innovative design and is made of advanced high composite materials, with a lifespan of up to 300,000 kilometers, covering the vehicle’s usage cycle. The surging power output is closely related to the highly integrated motor controller, which can maintain high-precision control strategies even at peak performance.
Not only excellent powertrain design, but BMW also demonstrates unique function integration and tuning. When starting, the powertrain responds within 100 milliseconds, delivering linear power. When overtaking other vehicles, users can activate the Boost function at any time through paddle shifters, instantly gaining an additional 30 Nm of torque output, allowing the car to move freely. Drivers can also freely choose driving modes through My Modes theme mode, changing the “skin” while giving the new car several completely different “personalities”. Each mode not only changes the atmosphere inside the car, such as ambient lighting, air conditioning airflow, but also adjusts power output characteristics, steering feel, and chassis response.
The unique driving pleasure of BMW is not just about acceleration, but also about deceleration. The new car uses a second-generation integrated braking system, which further enhances pedal feedback and communication between the driver and the car through electronic signal control of the braking system, making the braking feel “more BMW”. Thanks to this system, full braking pressure only takes 150 milliseconds, 4 times faster than traditional braking systems, reducing braking distance by up to 20% and further improving safety. BMW is renowned worldwide for its excellent handling, and every BMW model is a true “cornering expert”. The all-new BMW 5 Series also offers a seamless handling experience, thanks to its advanced digital technology and unique chassis engineering design. The new car is equipped with the “strongest brain of BMW chassis” – the 9th generation lateral dynamics management system, responsible for coordinating the various functions of the chassis, with a preference for corners over straight roads. This system monitors various dynamic parameters of the vehicle through sensors, analyzes and predicts the vehicle’s next dynamics, and then accurately and stably calls on the various chassis systems at critical moments.
The all-new BMW 5 Series features a high-quality body that is precise, strong, and intelligent in its lightweight construction. It is equipped with optimized double-wishbone front suspension and multi-link rear suspension, providing quick response to road bumps and stable directional control, balancing agility and comfort. The innovative electric BMW i5 chassis is further strengthened, with added metal reinforcement for front subframe rigidity, aluminum alloy rear subframe for body strength, and air suspension for the rear axle, meeting the demands for performance and comfort. The all-new BMW 5 Series also features an electric power steering system with variable steering ratio. It provides a more comfortable and convenient operation experience for parking and turning, while ensuring stability and relaxation for small angle turns, such as high-speed lane changes.
BMW adheres to the “human-centered ergonomics” concept, committed to creating an intelligent driving assistance system that is easy to understand, comfortable to use, and reassuring for users, in order to create a safe and comfortable driving experience that fits the human heart. Today, in the era before fully autonomous driving, BMW’s goal in designing intelligent driving assistance systems is to prioritize “safety-first” human-machine co-driving, providing users with clear boundaries for use and ensuring that users are always in the driving loop, that is, “driving in the loop”. To ensure that the driver is fully engaged in driving, the all-new BMW 5 Series is equipped with an attention monitoring system and a capacitive sensing steering wheel. The all-new BMW 5 Series is equipped with an automatic lane change function with line-of-sight confirmation, which is a concrete manifestation of the “human-centered ergonomics” and “driving in the loop” concept. After the driver’s line of sight is confirmed, the vehicle can automatically overtake within the speed range of 60-180 km/h. The third-generation BMW intelligent driving system equipped in the all-new BMW 5 Series is also based on the design concept of “safe use”, achieving full-stack software self-development for target recognition, path planning, drivable areas, computer vision fusion, road models, trajectory prediction, motion planning, control and decision-making, functional safety, use safety, and customer functions, surpassing the level of “functional safety” to enhance user psychological safety.
To ensure the robustness and safety of the system, BMW conducts comprehensive scenario testing. The BMW Group has established a simulated driving center, bringing real roads into the laboratory and simulating various travel scenarios at high frequency to provide users with a pleasant and comfortable intelligent driving experience. Before mass production, test vehicles undergo rigorous testing of over 2.4 million kilometers worldwide, equivalent to circling the equator 60 times. The L2+ level intelligent driving assistance system carried by the new BMW 5 Series has been updated for the Chinese market over 100 times, with over 2,000 local adjustments. It is fully tailored to the Chinese road conditions and user driving habits, in line with the preferences of Chinese users. For example, the automatic lane change function with visual confirmation has been optimized specifically for Chinese customers’ physical characteristics and driving habits, including model training for Chinese customers’ facial features, face shapes, and head shapes, to ensure their safety and convenience.
