On March 6, GAC Toyota officially launched the all-new 9th generation Camry. The new car is based on the TNGA-K platform and features Toyota’s latest family design language. It offers three appearance options tailored for the domestic market and significant upgrades in intelligence. The gasoline version is equipped with a 2.0L engine, while the hybrid version comes with two fifth-generation intelligent electric hybrid systems. The all-new ninth-generation Camry from GAC Toyota has a similar body to the eighth generation, but it adopts the latest family design language. Compared to the eighth generation, the overall shape is sharper, the lower front end brings a stronger sense of sportiness, and completely overturns the mediocre image of the old model. The three-dimensional level of the front face has been upgraded to be more refined, with the C-shaped headlights and the large lower grille, making it more modern in appearance.
The new 9th generation Camry from GAC Toyota has three different styles of front-end design for the Chinese market. The differences are mainly focused on the large-mouth front grille design. The LE model features a borderless diamond element design, aiming for a delicate futuristic feel. The SE model has a honeycomb grid design, aiming for a sleek sporty feel. The XSE model, based on the SE style, adds a sport package, aiming for a combination of sport and luxury.
The new car has a very dynamic side profile, with slight adjustments compared to the current model. The lower window line also gives the car a lower center of gravity. In terms of details, some models have sporty side wing decorations and two-tone contrasting roof designs, creating a floating visual effect. The new car will also offer a variety of wheel styles to choose from. The new car has significantly increased in size, with dimensions of 4980/1840/1450mm and a wheelbase of 2825mm, increasing the length by 65mm compared to the current model.
The sedan’s rear end design is continued, but it’s more sporty compared to the old model. The rich three-dimensional lines echo the sporty style of the front end. The trunk lid has a small ducktail, and the design of the taillights complements the headlights well. The exhaust is also hidden. Although the new car’s rear end does not adopt the currently popular through-type taillights, the elongated C-shaped taillights still have high recognition after lighting up.
The new car’s interior adopts the latest family design style, with the central control panel abandoning the Y-shaped structure of the old model and using a large number of horizontal lines. The hidden electrostatic touch panel is more modern than the old model. The car’s infotainment screen, chip, and system have been greatly optimized and upgraded, offering a 12.3-inch narrow-edge floating infotainment screen, a 12.3-inch LCD instrument panel, and an AR-HUD head-up display system. The car is equipped with a high-pass 8155 chip, with 4 times the computing power and 8 times the response speed of the current model, and provides about 40% computing power redundancy for future OTA updates. It also has 12GB of operating memory and 128GB of storage memory. The new infotainment system, based on the Android system, has a new interface and comes standard with Apple CarPlay, Baidu CarLife, and Huawei HiCar smartphone connectivity systems. It also features 3D facial recognition and can be equipped with a digital key.
In terms of in-car voice systems, the new car’s car system has been deeply developed in cooperation with Huawei, supporting abilities such as visible speech and multilingual mixed recognition. It can not only achieve mixed recognition of Mandarin, Cantonese, and English words, but also improve the response speed of voice commands by 60%. The system can also achieve continuous dialogue without the need for repeated wake-up calls.
The new car perception system has been comprehensively upgraded, with a 360-degree super panoramic perception system, doubling the forward detection distance and increasing the scanning area by about 8 times. It has 5 millimeter-wave radars, 8 ultrasonic radars, 4 surround-view cameras, and 1 forward-view camera. It includes 18 T-Pilot intelligent driving assistance functions, including RSA road sign recognition assistance system, PDA pre-judgment active driving assistance system, EDSS emergency driving stop system, LCA lane change assistance function, FCTA front traffic crossing warning system, and DMC driver status monitoring system. In terms of passive safety, the 9th generation Camry adds front and rear central airbags, equipped with 10 SRS airbags, and the front side airbags have changed from dual-chamber airbags to triple-chamber airbags, effectively protecting the shoulders, waist, and chest of the front occupants. The rear curtain airbags have increased by 78% compared to the current model.
In the cabin, the official claimed that the new car achieved up to 37 upgrades in quietness, with more than 90% of the soundproof cotton using a better white cotton effect; the rear window added a 0.76mm soundproof glass layer. The fixed panoramic sunroof has a lighting area of more than 1 square meter, and the central reinforcement of the sunroof uses hot-pressed materials. In addition, it also carries Toyota’s global first application of 64-color dynamic ambient lights and personalized interface intelligent fragrance, and the main models are equipped with 8 speakers.
In terms of power, the new car offers two power systems, 2.0L pure fuel power and 2.0HEV version, and the old model’s 2.5L+8AT power combination has been canceled. The 2.0L pure fuel power system has a maximum power of 127kW and a peak torque of 206N.m, matched with a CVT continuously variable transmission; the hybrid model is equipped with the fifth-generation THS hybrid system, and the 2.0HEV appears for the first time on the Camry, with a comprehensive power increase of 6% to 145kW compared to the previous generation, accelerating to 8 seconds per 100 kilometers, and fuel consumption of 4.2L/100km.
