In today’s era of electrification sweeping the global automotive market, hybrid systems are definitely a wise move in line with market trends. The all-new Ford Mondeo Sport Edition offers four powertrain options: 1.5T hybrid, 1.5T gasoline, 2.0T hybrid, and 2.0T gasoline. Compared to the previous generation, the addition of the 2.0T hybrid version makes it the only mid-to-high-end car in its class with four powertrain options. The 2.0T hybrid version has a maximum output power of 308 horsepower, increasing its competitiveness. Recently, in beautiful Dali, Yunnan, our editor had the opportunity to test drive the high-power E-hybrid version of the Ford Mondeo and also tested its fuel consumption performance under high power. Let’s see how it performs.
This time, we will compare the fuel consumption per hundred kilometers displayed on the vehicle dashboard directly. Before departure, reset the trip mileage, switch the driving mode to eco mode, set the air conditioning to automatic mode, and have three passengers in the car. The route will mainly follow the road along the Erhai Lake, with an estimated driving time of 2 hours.
Most roads are two-way four-lane with a speed limit of 60 km/h; sometimes, the road conditions are better, and speeds can reach 70-80 km/h.
Although energy-saving mode is used, it does not significantly affect the driving experience. We anticipate corners in advance through navigation to avoid braking and maximize kinetic energy recovery. On the graph, in busy road sections, after 24 minutes of driving, the displayed fuel consumption is 3.9L/100km.
After leaving the busy section, we maintained a steady speed on the national highway, averaging 40-50km/h. It is important to maintain a stable speed due to the high volume of tourist vehicles and the speed limit of 60km/h. We observed a decrease in fuel consumption on this road, averaging between 3.6L-3.7L/100km.
During driving, the Ford Mondeo Sport Edition uses an electronic continuously variable transmission, integrating the motor, motor controller, and vehicle controller into one. It eliminates the traditional starter motor and uses a generator instead for starting. With dual motors working together, it achieves up to 100% brake energy recovery, reaching an astonishing fuel consumption level of 3.5L/100km.
After about 2 hours, we reached the finish line. Staff recorded the data displayed on the dashboard, and our vehicle achieved a fuel consumption of 3.8L/100km. Several other vehicles were also tested, with the lowest fuel consumption reportedly reaching 3.6L/100km. This level of fuel consumption for a 2.0T hybrid model is at the top level of its class, as efficient as an electric car, and more convenient without the need for charging stations.
According to Ford, the Mondeo Sport version focuses on performance and high horsepower. Fuel consumption is not the main concern. Ford’s official suburban fuel consumption is 4.64L, with suspected reverse exaggeration.
When it comes to performance, the Mondeo Sport is equipped with the fifth-generation EcoBoost® 2.0T twin-scroll turbocharged direct injection engine, featuring an intake port injection + direct cylinder injection dual fuel injection system. With a 350Mpa ultra-high fuel injection pressure, combustion is more complete, power is stronger, and the engine delivers a maximum power of 212Kw at 5500 rpm and a maximum torque of 403Nm.
In the afternoon, we experienced the driving performance of the Ford Mondeo Sport Edition during high-power testing on a closed road section. Specifically, the Mondeo Sport Edition’s power is not just abundant, it is truly fierce. With a V6 engine producing up to 308 horsepower, it can easily reach speeds of 90-100km/h on uphill straight sections. The only downside may be the inadequate sound insulation, as there is some tire noise during driving.
Due to the elimination of the clutch design, there is no drag feeling when the clutch is engaged or disengaged. The motor is directly driven with a gear ratio of 11.1, providing instant power response. The estimated 0-100 acceleration is around 6 seconds, matching the official 5.79 seconds per 100 kilometers. With a fuel consumption level of around 3 liters, this design not only enhances power but also greatly optimizes fuel efficiency.
Ford is very good at tuning the chassis. We purposely tested the off-road performance and chassis level. The suspension provides good support and reduces vehicle roll when driving on rough roads.
Finally, let’s talk about the design of the exterior and interior of this car. Overall, the Changan Ford Mondeo Sport Edition adopts a familial “kinetic aesthetic” design, featuring a crossover style with streamlined body design, dynamic lines outlining the sporty temperament of the vehicle, and a personalized 5-door hatchback design.
In the front, there is a hexagonal grille with flat elements and a scaled design, giving it a bold and textured look. Higher trim levels offer a sport package option.
The upper part has a continuous light strip, and the lower part has a stylish split front headlight assembly. The raised muscle lines on the hood further enhance the overall sportiness of the vehicle. The front bumper is equipped with the ST-Line factory exclusive sports kit, with more black elements for a more aggressive look.
In terms of body size, the new car is 4920*1920*1600, with a length close to 5 meters and a width of nearly 2 meters. The wheelbase is 2945mm, providing higher space utilization. On the side of the car, a sharp waistline extends from the front fender to the taillights, creating a dynamic posture. The roof adopts a smoked black design, creating a floating effect. With a ground clearance of 168mm, it achieves better passability than ordinary sedans and better handling and comfort than SUVs.
The rear styling is highly recognizable, with a steeply angled rear windshield, continuous taillights, dual spoilers on the roof, and dual exhaust layout, all highlighting the sporty design of the vehicle.
The car we tested today has a 20-inch tornado wheel hub design, which looks dynamic and exquisite. It is paired with 225/45 R20 tires to improve driving comfort.
Furthermore, the vehicle features hidden door handles, significantly reducing aerodynamic drag.
Upon entering the car, the most eye-catching feature is the 1.1-meter-long integrated screen on the center console surface. On the right is a 27-inch 4K central control screen, featuring Ford’s new generation SYNC+2.0 smart connectivity system. It supports GPS navigation, road assistance, and over 70 semantic recognitions for a more intelligent and convenient driving experience. With the FNV electronic architecture, the car supports full-vehicle OTA online upgrades, with basic data usage free of charge. On the left is a 12.3-inch full LCD digital instrument panel, displaying various driving information such as RPM, speed, electric and fuel range, fuel consumption, navigation, and driving modes.
The steering wheel features a three-spoke flat-bottom design, resembling a whale’s tail fin. The multifunction buttons on the top are physical buttons, making them easy to operate and preventing accidental touches. Overall, the feel is very good.
0.94 square meters panoramic sunroof with electric sunshade, wide view, avoid excessive temperature influence. Red decoration in black interior for a younger and sportier look.
The overall comfort of the front seats is high. They feature an integrated design that provides satisfactory lumbar support. The lumbar and thigh wings are excellent as usual. The all-black seats are made of high-quality, skin-friendly materials.
Thanks to the 2945mm wheelbase, the nearly 5-meter long car body brings a higher utilization of space. The legroom in the rear reaches about 1 meter, with a flat central aisle allowing for comfortable seating. The rear seats can be adjusted in multiple positions and can be folded down to expand the trunk space from 527L to 1550L. The rear seats also come with three headrests.
Summary: Due to the fact that the Mondeo Sport version and the Mondeo 4-door version are based on the same platform, many consumers believe that the Sport version and the Mondeo 4-door version should be part of the same series. In this case, Changan Ford listened to consumers’ voices and integrated the Sport version into the Mondeo family lineage. As a classic model that has undergone five generations over 30 years, what do people think of the latest Mondeo Sport version?
