On July 29, Geely conducted a live stream to showcase the disassembly of a battery pack from a Galaxy E5 durability test vehicle, which has exceeded 300,000 kilometers. They also performed a health check on a Shield short blade battery pack that underwent 921 charge-discharge cycles. The results showed that after driving 300,000 kilometers in high temperatures, extreme cold, and high humidity, the battery pack remained structurally intact and well-protected. After completing 921 full charge-discharge tests, the Shield short blade battery pack still retained 90.5% health. To ensure vehicle safety and reliability, Geely subjects each model to various tests before launch. These tests include high temperature, extreme cold, and high altitude scenarios. They cover all vehicle domains, including powertrain, chassis, electronics, interior and exterior, and intelligent driving. The Galaxy E5, which had its battery pack disassembled, was one of the vehicles used in Geely’s durability validation process.
The disassembly results show that the Galaxy E5’s Shield Short Blade battery pack remains intact and well-protected, even after driving 300,000 kilometers in extreme temperatures and humidity. Removing the top cover reveals no dust or foreign objects inside. The battery cells show no deformation or leaks. The Shield Short Blade battery pack features an industry-leading CTB structure. It uses a robust grid-like frame for added protection. The design includes a large energy absorption buffer space between the cells and the frame. Additional safety measures include liquid-electric separation, electrical isolation, and heat dissipation. These features enhance the battery pack’s safety level.
The Shield Short Knife battery pack passed six rigorous serial tests at the China Automotive Technology and Research Center. After enduring challenges like “wave immersion, extreme cold at high altitudes, high-frequency scraping, 26-ton violent crushing, side column impact, and fire exposure,” the battery pack showed no smoke, fire, or explosion. All parameters remained normal after resting. Many individual tests exceeded national standards and featured industry-first challenging conditions. Geely publicly disassembled the battery pack and tested its health during a live broadcast. A Shield Short Knife battery pack, which completed 921 full charge-discharge cycles, supports over 400,000 kilometers of driving range. Its health remains at an impressive 90.5%. In contrast, similar market products drop to 80% health after just 500 cycles, with significantly shorter cycle life than the Shield Short Knife battery pack.
The durability of the Shield Short Knife battery pack comes from the long cycle life of its cells. Compared to the Long Knife, the Shield Short Knife cell is shorter, has lower internal resistance, and generates less heat. It uses multi-element doped cathode materials and small particle anode materials. A special coating method reduces electrochemical side reactions, significantly extending the cell’s cycle performance. The Shield Short Knife cell offers up to 3,500 cycles. This translates to over 1 million kilometers of driving range. One generation of the Shield Short Knife cell can service two generations of vehicles. This solution addresses the low resale value of used electric vehicles. It also effectively delays the large-scale retirement of cells, reducing carbon emissions from battery retirement, disassembly, and recycling.
The Shield short blade battery offers ultra-fast charging and low-temperature resistance. It takes only 17 minutes and 4 seconds to charge from 10% to 80% SOC. The average charging rate reaches 2.45C, surpassing the long blade battery’s 1.61C. Even at -30℃, the Shield short blade battery maintains a capacity retention of 90.54%. In contrast, the long blade battery only retains 78.96%.
