On the eve of his tenth birthday, XPeng Motors held an “AI Smart Driving Technology Launch” in Guangzhou. CEO He Xiaopeng announced that XPeng would globally release the AI Dimensity system XOS 5.2.0. This update brings 484 feature upgrades for smart driving and smart cockpit. With this update, XNGP will upgrade from “usable nationwide” to “easy to use nationwide.” It will achieve nationwide access without city, route, or road condition restrictions.
End-to-end large models accelerate the evolution of smart driving technology. He Xiaopeng believes AI will lead new trends and technological waves after 2023, following computer networks, the internet, mobile internet, new energy vehicles, and cloud services. AI brings four new directions: chips, large models, autonomous driving, and robots. Xiaopeng Motors is one of the companies riding this AI wave. In the AI era, Xiaopeng Motors launched China’s first mass-produced end-to-end smart driving large model—neural network XNet, regulation control model XPlanner, and large language model XBrain. It is one of only two companies globally to achieve mass production of end-to-end large models.
With the support of end-to-end large models, Xiaopeng’s driving technology and experience have evolved rapidly. In July, XNGP will launch in all cities nationwide. This achievement reflects more than just recent efforts. Xiaopeng Motors is known for its strong focus on technology. Since its founding, the company has prioritized intelligence as a key brand feature. It now boasts nearly ten years of experience in mass-producing intelligent systems. For 2024, the company plans to invest 3.5 billion yuan in artificial intelligence research and development. According to He Xiaopeng, Xiaopeng Motors has a maximum AI computing power reserve of 2.51 EFLOPS.
Xpeng Motors led the way in mass-producing end-to-end large models. After this, they implemented OTA updates. They now release a version every two days and an experience upgrade every two weeks. Since the global launch of the AI Tianji system on May 20, they have pushed five full updates in 70 days. This resulted in at least 35 version iterations.
XNGP undergoes a full upgrade. He Xiaopeng announced the change at the press conference. XNGP now meets the “nationwide usability” standard. He introduced three key criteria: no city restrictions, no route restrictions, and no road condition restrictions.
XNGP expands its coverage to all cities nationwide. It breaks free from the constraints of high-precision maps. It brings advanced smart driving into the era of end-to-end large models.
XNGP gained the ability to operate nationwide early this year. However, Xiaopeng Motors spent over six months on extensive real-world testing to ensure safety. Currently, XNGP has validated testing in over 2,595 cities in China. The total testing mileage exceeds 7.56 million kilometers. AI training has generalized and expanded the intelligent driving system for all cities nationwide.
XNGP applies to all public roads in the country. Where navigation exists, AI smart driving can operate. In the latest public test version, AI driving can automatically pass through ETC toll stations. By the fourth quarter of 2024, XNGP will integrate smart driving at ETC toll stations, parking barriers, and internal roads. This will enable a true “door-to-door” experience.
XNGP adapts to various road conditions. It handles complex scenarios like U-turns, roundabouts, and narrow roads. This makes it the first AI driving system to cover all complex situations. Previous smart driving assistance systems relied on rule-based codes. Engineers had to write extensive rules for complex scenes like roundabouts and U-turns. This approach had a low success rate. With the end-to-end large model now in production, XNGP enhances its learning ability. It can learn while driving. It responds in real-time to the complexities of roundabouts and U-turns.
Xpeng Motors defined different stages of smart driving in China. This builds on the three major standards of “usable nationwide.”
Currently, Xiaopeng Motors’ smart driving is in the first phase of “usable nationwide.” It expects to achieve the second phase by Q4 2024. By the end of 2025 or early 2026, it will significantly reduce instances of user safety and efficiency takeovers. This will enhance the smoothness of the user experience, leading to greater user satisfaction.
AI Tianji System XOS 5.2.0 launches globally. This version brings 484 feature upgrades. It focuses on smart driving, ecosystem connectivity, and intelligent cockpit. Nine new features will roll out on July 30 for Chinese users. The full rollout for overseas users starts on August 15.
Xiao Peng Motors’ smart experience director, Yu Tong, announced the update. It adds the “Camera Perception for Parking” feature and the “100m Follow-Track Reversing” function. The “100m Follow-Track Reversing” operates in tight spaces, like dead ends and narrow roads. It automatically retraces the original path. Users can return to the starting point with one click.
The camera detects the “leave parking” action. This feature will upgrade at the 520 AI DAY. Car owners can trigger automatic parking by covering specific external cameras after exiting the vehicle. This reduces parking stress during common scenarios, like retrieving items from the trunk.
The AI Dimensity system XOS 5.2.0 connects with the Apple ecosystem. It adds remote voice control, gesture control, and versatile NFC touch control. To create a personalized cockpit, it introduces 80 new customizable displays and 1,620 new driving modes. It also includes comprehensive screen mirroring.
At the press conference, He Xiaopeng shared recent updates about Xiaopeng Motors. This year, Xiaopeng Motors accelerated its International 2.0 strategy. So far, it has entered 30 countries and regions worldwide, including Europe, the Middle East, Asia Pacific, Africa, and Latin America.
Xpeng Motors and Volkswagen Group deepen their collaboration. On July 22, they signed a strategic cooperation agreement for joint development of electronic and electrical architecture technology. They plan to launch the first model based on this architecture within 24 months. Xpeng’s latest S5 liquid-cooled supercharging station will go live in the third quarter of 2024. Users can check the latest S5 station information through the Xpeng app and mini-programs. The S5 station has a maximum power of 800KW. The charging connector starts in under 13 seconds. It delivers a maximum output current of 800A and a maximum output voltage of 1000V. This allows charging speeds of over 1 kilometer in 1 second. The station also features a smart indicator light for the charging connector and comprehensive leakage protection with millisecond-level interruption protection.
On August 15, Xpeng Motors will celebrate its tenth birthday. The “AI Smart Driving Technology Launch” serves as a warm-up for the anniversary and a birthday gift to itself. In the smart driving field, “end-to-end” will spark a new wave of technological iteration and competition. Xpeng appears fully prepared for these challenges.
