Acura plans to produce an electric sports car similar to the NSX. Shinji Aoyama, the global executive vice president, announced this. The new car will launch in 2027 or 2028. The Honda NSX sold in the U.S. as the Acura NSX. It gained popularity in the 1990s for its design, handling, and aluminum monocoque. The name stands for “New Sportscar eXperimental,” reflecting Honda’s goal to explore future technologies. In 2016, Acura released a new NSX with over 500 horsepower and a hybrid system. However, it lacked charging capabilities. It entered the market later than competitors like the Tesla Roadster and Porsche 918. As a result, it failed to attract consumer interest and ceased production in 2022. Honda later stated that NSX now means “New Sports eXperience.”
Acura seems ready to relaunch sports car technology. A pure electric sports car, similar to the NSX, will debut soon.
Acura previously showcased a concept car similar to the NSX. At the last Monterey Car Week, Acura revealed the “Electric Vision” concept. The design closely resembles the NSX. However, the company did not disclose if or when it would enter production, calling it a “design study.” So far, Honda and Acura have launched one electric vehicle in the U.S., the Prologue/ZDX. This vehicle does not use a Honda platform; it is built on GM’s Ultium platform. Honda’s other electric vehicle in the U.S. is the CR-V e: FCEV. This car features a pure electric drive system but can charge via a plug or use hydrogen fuel. It is currently available only in California. Honda also collaborates with Sony to develop the AFEELA prototype, expected to launch in 2026.
