The Avita range extension technology launch took place at the Shanghai Oil Tank Art Center. Avita Technology officially introduced the Kunlun range extension. This marks its entry into the range extension market. The company plans to release several pure electric and range extension models within the year. These models will meet diverse and comprehensive travel needs. Hu Chengtai, Vice President of Avita Technology, stated, “We believe that good range extension offers an experience close to pure electric, with no mileage anxiety. Avita is a high-end new energy brand rooted in pure electric. If we are to develop range extension, it must meet pure electric experience standards.” To achieve this, Avita Technology applied years of full-stack self-research. It first utilized peak intelligence in range extension technology. The company relies on the synergy of software and hardware to lead the generational leap from traditional range extension to intelligent range extension.
During its full-stack development, Avita Technology focused on user driving experiences. It equipped the Kunlun range extender with industry-leading temperature, torque, and oil-electric control capabilities. This precise control transformed user perception. The intelligent features also enabled sustainable OTA upgrades. This extended the “always fresh” driving experience to the power domain, rivaling the performance, quietness, and convenience of pure electric vehicles. Traditional range extenders deliver strong power when the battery is full. However, power significantly decreases in low-charge situations, affecting user experiences in high-demand scenarios like highway driving and climbing. To address this issue, Avita Technology partnered with CATL to create the 39kWh Shenxing super hybrid battery. This battery offers a peak discharge rate of 9C when fully charged and maintains a 7.7C peak discharge rate even at low charge. As a result, the Avita 07 range extender all-wheel drive model accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.8 seconds, even in low-charge conditions.
Kunlun developed the seven-in-one rear electric drive. It delivers a peak power of 231 kW and a wheel-end torque of 4500 Nm. The Avita 07 range-extended all-wheel-drive model accelerates from 40 to 80 km/h in just 1.8 seconds and from 80 to 120 km/h in 2.7 seconds. To protect the motor from overheating, the system intervenes during continuous acceleration. It limits power, causing a drop in performance. Avita combines oil cooling technology with AI models to enhance rotor temperature estimation accuracy. It reduces the common industry estimate from 30°C to 8°C, nearly quadrupling precision. This prevents premature or excessive interventions. As a result, Avita models with Kunlun range-extending technology maintain performance after 25 consecutive accelerations at 100 km/h. The Avita range-extended models feature an intelligent energy management system. It adjusts torque based on real road conditions during uphill and downhill scenarios. Users do not need to frequently recharge or brake. This reduces acceleration pedal changes and braking frequency by 60%. It also minimizes dizziness from rapid motor torque response. Drivers experience less fatigue, and passengers feel less motion sickness. Traditional range-extended vehicles generate noise from the engine when running low on power, especially at low speeds or idle, affecting passenger comfort. To achieve the quietness of pure electric vehicles, Avita developed the Kunlun HE 1.5T supercharged engine. It features the world’s first electronic oil pump technology and active control for the stop-start piston. This innovation keeps cabin sound pressure during idle charging at 35.7 dB, providing a seamless range extension experience with zero perception.
Unlike traditional oil pumps, this technology uses an electronic oil pump. It builds oil pressure in advance. This provides immediate lubrication after engine start. It effectively reduces noise, boosts efficiency, and extends engine life. Kunlun’s unique stop-piston active control technology allows the Avita range-extended models to position the piston accurately when the engine shuts down. This positioning minimizes cylinder pressure, resistance, and vibration. It significantly reduces vibration and noise during engine start. Kunlun’s intelligent energy management system connects smart driving and cabin domains. It plans engine engagement based on onboard navigation conditions. When Kunlun determines that the vehicle cannot navigate congested areas on current battery power, it starts the engine early. It prioritizes fuel use when the road is clear, preserving electric power for congested sections. This ensures users enjoy the quietness and comfort of electric vehicles, even in slow-moving traffic. The Kunlun range-extended HE 1.5T supercharged engine excels in quietness. Its thermal efficiency and fuel-to-electric conversion rate reach industry-leading levels. Since the supercharged engine does not drive the vehicle directly, it has smaller cylinder diameters compared to traditional engines of the same displacement. With higher injection pressure and spark plug energy, it achieves a thermal efficiency of 44.39%. It generates 3.63 kWh of electricity per liter of fuel, significantly reducing fuel consumption. Currently, traditional range-extended vehicles lag behind pure electric vehicles in refueling efficiency. Their limited electric range requires frequent charging, leading to a poor refueling experience. To enhance this experience, the Avita range-extended models will feature a 39kWh Shenxing super hybrid battery. It can charge from 30% to 80% in just 15 minutes at a peak charge rate of 3C. Additionally, Kunlun’s technology provides strong power retention, ensuring the battery depletes only after the fuel during daily driving.
