The bold and avant-garde exterior and upgraded interior technology highlight its appeal. After these updates, its position remains clear: it aims to be the benchmark sports sedan in its class at a lower price. We previously conducted a static experience of this new car. The visible improvements are clear. Now, let’s focus on the driving mechanics it offers.
First, let’s discuss the powertrain. The new MG5 continues with the existing options. It offers two engine choices: a 1.5L and a 1.5T. The maximum power reaches 129 horsepower and 181 horsepower, respectively. The peak torque is 158 Nm and 285 Nm. You can see that these two engines target different groups of people.
The transmission offers two options: a simulated 8-speed CVT and a 7-speed wet dual-clutch transmission. The official WLTC combined fuel consumption is 6.38/6.45 L/100 km. We tested the dual-clutch version. It clearly embodies a purer sports spirit.

You can easily start first at traffic lights. The initial movement feels light, without an overpowering sensation.
It is a family car. The tuning considers economy. During normal commutes, the transmission shifts up actively. It completes shifts before 2000 RPM for better fuel efficiency. Therefore, it offers few driving modes. Only the S mode is available.
On the highway, the acceleration in the mid-range stands out. You don’t need to worry about power output. The downshift response is quick. At mid to high speeds, just press the gas pedal, and the power is ready. You won’t feel a delay when you need to accelerate. Unless you slam the throttle, turbo lag is barely noticeable. Even when cruising at high speeds, the powertrain still feels strong enough for more acceleration.
The new model lacks impressive performance in smart driving. Its sporty positioning and price limit its features. It does not support advanced driver assistance systems. It only offers basic cruise control, which is understandable. Few manufacturers at this price point provide smart driving systems. Consumers choosing this model likely have low expectations in this area. However, it thoughtfully includes a 360-degree rearview camera and a transparent chassis. For this price, these features are quite advanced.
The front MacPherson and rear torsion beam chassis hardware is common in this class. It features a variable cross-section rear suspension. Engineers optimized the entire chassis. The chassis handles rough roads with ease. It maintains a neutral road feel. It also excels at large bumps. The ride quality rivals higher-end joint venture sedans. The chassis ensures a stable ride for passengers. It also provides clear road feedback to the driver.
The steering wheel uses the EPS-PRO smart adjustable steering system. It offers three adjustable damping settings. The electronic feel is noticeable. It still provides a sporty experience. For example, it takes just over two and a half turns to go from full left to full right. This range ensures smooth handling in various corners.
The black technology remains. It features the only XDS dynamic cornering control system in its class. When the vehicle turns at high speed, the system actively brakes the inner wheels. It adjusts the engine’s torque based on conditions. This generates a helpful lateral force for steering. It enhances the vehicle’s performance and safety in corners. The overall experience shows sharp steering response. Even with the Atlas AS380 tires, which are not sport-focused, the handling feels very good.
