Mercedes-Benz Unveils Game-Changing Solid-State Battery for 1,000 km Range

In February 2025, a test vehicle based on Mercedes-Benz’s new solid-state battery project began road testing. Factorial Energy supplied the battery cells. Mercedes-Benz’s battery systems technology center and F1 experts from Mercedes-AMG developed the entire battery system. This system achieves an energy density of 450 watt-hours per kilogram, surpassing competitors. The all-electric EQS test vehicle, equipped with this solid-state battery, increases range by 25%. It can easily travel 1,000 kilometers on a single charge. The vehicle also achieves breakthroughs in safety, efficiency, and lightweight design.

Mercedes-Benz Unveils Game-Changing Solid-State Battery for 1,000 km Range

Mercedes-Benz uses solid-state electrolytes in all its solid-state batteries. This design eliminates the risks of liquid electrolyte leaks and enhances safety. Traditional solid-state batteries face risks during charging and discharging due to material expansion and contraction. To address this, Mercedes-Benz adds pneumatic actuators beyond industry standards. These actuators respond to volume changes in the cell during charging and discharging. This innovation improves battery performance and lifespan while ensuring safer travel.

Mercedes-Benz Unveils Game-Changing Solid-State Battery for 1,000 km Range

Mercedes-Benz’s all-solid-state battery prototype uses a lithium metal anode. Its performance significantly surpasses traditional lithium-ion batteries. The energy density reaches an industry-leading 450 watt-hours per kilogram. The all-electric EQS test vehicle features this lithium metal anode solid-state battery. It increases the range by up to 25%. With one charge, the range easily exceeds 1,000 kilometers.

Mercedes-Benz Unveils Game-Changing Solid-State Battery for 1,000 km Range

Solid-state batteries feature high energy density. Compared to liquid electrolyte batteries, they occupy less space and require fewer cells for the same energy. This reduces the total weight of the battery pack. Mercedes-Benz uses passive cooling technology in its solid-state batteries. This design eliminates the need for extra active cooling components. It further reduces vehicle weight and enhances energy efficiency.

Mercedes-Benz Unveils Game-Changing Solid-State Battery for 1,000 km Range

Mercedes-Benz Battery Systems Technology Center and Mercedes-AMG High-Performance Powertrains collaborate with industry leader Factorial Energy. They drive the development of a solid-state battery project. Factorial Energy has worked with Mercedes-Benz since 2021. In September 2024, Factorial Energy will deliver lithium-metal solid-state battery cells using the proprietary FESTĀ® solid-state platform to Mercedes-Benz. This marks the first use of lithium-metal anode solid-state batteries in mass production vehicles. It signifies a step forward for solid-state battery technology into production.
