The Mercedes-Benz GLE competes with the BMW X5. In recent years, wealthy buyers have ignored it due to high import prices. Last year, the BMW X5 sold 87,000 units. Now, the domestic version of the Mercedes-Benz GLE is on the way. What advantages will it have over the BMW X5? Can it achieve strong sales after local production? Let’s take a look.
Let’s talk about size. Since this is a domestic model, it needs to be lengthened. This better meets the preference of Chinese buyers for larger SUVs.
The domestic version of the Mercedes-Benz GLE measures 5044mm in length and has a wheelbase of 3115mm. It is 117mm longer and 120mm longer than the current imported version. The overall increase is significant.
After production began, the width and height of the domestically produced Mercedes-Benz GLE decreased. This means that, aside from its longer wheelbase, the GLE falls short compared to the domestic BMW X5. This raises concerns about its future sales figures.
The interior of the domestic version of the Mercedes-Benz GLE will likely continue the latest yacht-style design. It will offer a spacious five-seat layout. The vehicle will feature the latest Mercedes-Benz infotainment system. This system will support L2+ level driver assistance.
When it comes to the interior, many regret that this car lacks a large seven-seat layout. Honestly, I initially thought the domestic Mercedes GLE would offer a large seven-seat option. This would differentiate it from the BMW X5. However, upon reflection, the car’s wheelbase is just over 3.1 meters. If it had a seven-seat configuration, the second and third rows would likely feel cramped. So, perhaps a large five-seat layout is best. It depends on how people view and consider this issue.
For the powertrain, the lower-priced models will feature a 2.0T engine, similar to the BMW X5 30Li. After discounts, its price drops to around 500,000, making it a highly cost-effective choice. The high-end models may use the latest M256 EVO 6-cylinder engine. The plug-in hybrid version will also include this engine to enhance performance.
Don’t forget, the BMW X5 40Li model features a 3.0T L6 engine. Therefore, the domestic Mercedes-Benz GLE will likely offer a 3.0T version as well.
Mercedes-Benz has invested nearly 3.4 billion in the domestic version of the GLE model. The annual production capacity will reach 40,000 units. The new car is set to start production in mid-2027. We will see the actual vehicle around that time.
Price discussions are pure speculation. The car hasn’t entered production yet. Any price mentioned is subjective guesswork. Personally, I see the BMW X5’s domestic manufacturer suggested price at 615,000 to 830,000 yuan (113820$). After discounts, it drops to 510,400 to 780,200 yuan (106990$). Could the Mercedes GLE be in a similar price range?
Think about it. If the domestically produced Mercedes-Benz GLE sells for the same price range of 699,800 to 882,800 yuan (121060$) as the imported version, what’s the point? I believe the price of the domestically produced GLE will likely match that of the BMW X5. Friends interested in it should stay tuned. Note: The image comes from the internet.
