Recently, Volvo announced that its Chengdu plant produced its one millionth vehicle. The plant started operations in August 2013. It took 141 months to reach this milestone. The one millionth vehicle is a Volvo XC60.
Volvo’s Chengdu factory strictly follows global standards for procurement, manufacturing, technology, and quality. It embodies Volvo’s commitment to “Made in China, Global Quality.” The factory integrates global standards with smart manufacturing at every stage. The stamping workshop achieves 100% automation. It uses advanced steel-aluminum hybrid stamping and seamless switching technology, ensuring precision and efficiency. The welding workshop features 666 smart robots. It builds an adaptive welding system that combines aerospace-grade self-piercing rivets and laser welding technology. Rigorous tests like ultrasonic scanning, blue light detection, and tear tests ensure a five-star safety body. The painting workshop employs 16 anti-corrosion processes. It uses BASF’s sixth-generation electrophoretic technology and eco-friendly water-based paint applied by fully automated robots. This achieves “12 years of corrosion resistance in extreme environments,” far exceeding industry standards. In the final assembly workshop, the body and chassis undergo “integrated automatic assembly.” Sixty-four bolts tighten simultaneously with precision, and all critical bolt data is traceable for life, ensuring full lifecycle support. Notably, the Chengdu factory maintains a seven-level quality inspection system throughout the entire production process, from procurement to stamping, welding, painting, and assembly, rigorously controlling product quality.
Chengdu factory practices sustainable development. It sets an industry benchmark for sustainable manufacturing through continuous innovation. In 2020, Chengdu factory became the first vehicle manufacturing plant in China to operate on 100% renewable electricity. It significantly reduced reliance on fossil fuels by using biomass gas and deploying solar power facilities. Chengdu factory transformed its production process to a sustainable model. It also achieved breakthroughs in resource recycling. In December 2024, the factory launched a high-value recycling project for stamped steel waste. It reduced waste per vehicle from 161 kilograms to 75 kilograms, greatly improving resource efficiency. By 2025, Chengdu factory achieved climate-neutral operations. It demonstrated Volvo’s strong commitment to sustainable development through practical low-carbon manufacturing actions.
The XC60 inherits Volvo’s century-long safety legacy. It features a high-strength boron steel cage structure. The car includes seven intelligent safety systems: urban smart safety, road departure prevention, fatigue warning, oncoming vehicle avoidance, BLIS blind spot information, rear cross traffic alert, and rear collision warning. These systems maximize family safety. The cabin uses baby-grade, hypoallergenic materials. CleanZone® technology purifies the air, ensuring it meets Nordic standards for freshness. This makes precious family time healthier and more enjoyable. The XC60 mild hybrid has a more powerful engine. It offers smooth start-stop and efficient power. The plug-in hybrid all-wheel-drive luxury version includes adaptive chassis and air suspension. This ensures a smoother ride through city streets and countryside.
