Geely Galaxy E5: Five-Star Safety and Innovative Crash Defense Technology

On April 16, the Geely Galaxy E5 successfully passed a challenging test at the TECCON laboratory in Austria, certified by Euro NCAP. The test involved a 50 km/h frontal impact against a center pillar. Previously, the Geely Galaxy E5 earned a five-star safety rating from both Euro NCAP and ANCAP. It is the only Chinese electric SUV in the 150,000 yuan (20690$) category to achieve this dual five-star rating.

The frontal center pillar poses a significant challenge during collisions. In the front cabin of a car, two main longitudinal beams absorb energy and provide support during a crash. These beams are crucial in frontal collisions. However, when the frontal center pillar strikes, it completely misaligns with the two beams. This misalignment tests the structural design of the vehicle. The test pillar is rigid and does not absorb energy. Its diameter is only 25.4 cm, resulting in a small overlap with the vehicle. At a speed of 50 km/h, this can cause the front structure to deform rapidly and may lead to significant intrusion into the passenger cabin. Fuel vehicles have engines and transmissions that block intrusion. In contrast, new energy vehicles have more open front cabins. High-voltage electric drives, controls, and cables are more prone to short circuits or fires after impact compared to fuel vehicles. Test results confirm these risks.

1. The Galaxy E5 enhances the center pillar’s crash defense with multiple cross beams. It optimizes the layout, function, and physical protection of high-pressure components. This ensures the center pillar’s safety. It successfully withstands a 50 km/h center pillar impact test. 2. The Galaxy E5 automatically activates the hazard lights. The E-CALL feature dials emergency services automatically. The door handles pop out, allowing all four doors to open without tools. The high-voltage power supply disconnects. These functions work properly, providing strong support for accident rescue. 3. The passenger cabin structure remains intact. The battery pack shows no signs of leakage, smoke, or fire. 4. Inside the cabin, airbags deploy normally. The contact point between the airbags and the head is correct. High-speed footage shows the seatbelts pre-tensioning properly, ensuring effective protection. 5. Data collected during tests shows the two female dummies in the front seats meet Euro NCAP’s injury criteria for head, neck, chest, and thigh in rigid wall impact tests. Geely’s Global Strategy The Galaxy E5 has launched in multiple countries, with total sales nearing 120,000 units. It receives a warm response in right-hand drive markets like Indonesia and Thailand. On March 2, the first 84 units were delivered to Thailand, fulfilling a 1,000-unit order. On March 11, Geely entered the Australian and New Zealand markets, marking its presence on five continents. This year, it plans to launch in over 20 overseas markets. Safety Standards Development China will implement new safety requirements for electric vehicle batteries starting July 1, 2026. Geely leads the development of the new standard, which includes a bottom impact test for batteries. In February 2023, Geely announced new standards for bottom collision testing of electric vehicles. The Galaxy E5 became the first electric vehicle to pass the 30 km/h and 20 km/h bottom impact tests without damage, addressing battery damage and safety issues from bottom collisions.
