The Shanghai Auto Show introduced the new smart #5 model: the ultra-long-range luxury four-wheel drive version. The price is 279,900 yuan (38410$). The other two models, the long-range luxury version and the ultra-long-range luxury version, cost 229,900 yuan (31550$) and 254,900 yuan (34980$), respectively. Before the auto show, we test-drove the four-wheel drive version. The straightforward name highlights the car’s core appeal: enjoy long-range capabilities and luxury quality for a richer travel experience.
Last October, smart#5 officially launched. This medium SUV features a “boxy” design. Its sharp lines stand out. With a length of 4705mm and a wheelbase of 2900mm, it is the largest model in smart’s history. At launch, the only dual-motor all-wheel-drive version was a limited edition called “Jungle Realm.” The others were single-motor, two-wheel-drive models. The newly released long-range all-wheel-drive version optimizes dual motors and improves range and features. It meets the needs of users seeking more driving enjoyment and unlocks the vehicle’s potential.
The test drive route starts in western Beijing. It passes through Youzhou Grand Canyon and follows the Hanging Wall Road to Guanting Reservoir. The route includes city roads, highways, and rugged unpaved surfaces. It fully tests the new car’s chassis, handling, and capability.
The smart #5 is a spacious SUV. However, it feels nimble rather than heavy when driving. The front double wishbone and rear five-link suspension provide good support while emphasizing comfort. The front suspension uses hydraulic bushings for comfort and precise steering. The rear five-link suspension filters bumps effectively with low dynamic stiffness bushings and multi-chamber hydraulic bushings. It maintains stability on uneven surfaces. The smart #5 features an air suspension system called “Magic Carpet.” It supports ±95mm height adjustment with a maximum ground clearance of 231mm. At high speeds, the suspension lowers automatically to enhance stability. In off-road mode, it raises the chassis as needed for better clearance. Additionally, the car includes CCD continuously variable dampers with a response rate of 500 times per second. This improves overall driving performance, especially in reducing acceleration squat, braking dive, and body roll in tight corners.
The four-wheel drive dual-motor system enables the smart #5 to handle various road conditions. It makes daily driving more enjoyable. With a peak power of 432 kW and torque of 643 N·m, it accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.9 seconds. On the highway, the responsive power and mid-range strength boost confidence and excitement. The power delivery remains linear, avoiding the abruptness often found in electric vehicles. The vehicle offers three paved road modes and five all-terrain modes. These options integrate seamlessly into the system. While the smart #5’s off-road capability isn’t top-tier, it features a maximum wading depth of 500 mm and a maximum climbing angle of 45°. It still has room to conquer challenging terrains. However, that isn’t its primary focus. The chosen route reflects this. It lacks extreme slopes, craters, and cross-axle challenges. Instead, it emphasizes a “comfortable crossing.” With a turning radius of 5.6 meters, it maneuvers easily in tight spaces. The four-wheel drive system provides ample traction and power reserves. The air suspension enhances comfort over gravel and uneven surfaces.
The manufacturer even redeveloped a steering system for the smart #5. This upgrade enhances the car’s handling feel. It makes every turn smooth.
Driving this small car requires little off-road skill or complex maneuvers. With the dual Orin X chips and advanced lidar-assisted driving, you can focus on the scenery. After nearly four hours of driving, I felt relaxed and not fatigued. The sturdy box surprisingly holds a soft comfort.
You won’t worry about range. The 800V high-voltage platform and 4C fast charging technology enhance both range and charging efficiency. The CLTC range reaches up to 740 km. Under fast charging, you can add 500 km of range in just 15 minutes.
The smart #5 quickly launched its four-wheel-drive version. This likely responds to user demand. It is a family car that offers off-road fun. It remains focused on family use but expands your travel radius. You don’t have to stay confined to the city. The arrival of four-wheel drive enhances this feature.
The smart #5 all-wheel drive offers a tangible upgrade in driving experience. It also provides plenty of emotional value. Its boxy shape has many fans. The continuous LED light strip and four staggered daytime running lights highlight its futuristic appeal. The 4705mm body length, floating roof, and side ladder design blend rugged off-road elements with urban fashion.
The interior quality stands out. The Alpine wood trim impresses. The Sennheiser audio system features 20 speakers, including adjustable satellite speakers. The 25.6-inch AR-HUD and dual 13-inch AMOLED screens enhance the tech feel. The frameless doors add style, while the double-layer laminated glass ensures quietness throughout the vehicle.
The rear space proves this car is “big.” The flat floor allows ample legroom. The seat cushions are long and supportive. Additionally, the rear seats support a 10° recline adjustment.
Previously, smart focused on personality and compactness. Now, the electric smart adds fun and comfort. The smart #5 breaks boundaries with its size and performance. The all-wheel-drive version expands its appeal with solid performance. Spring is approaching, making this new, adventurous car a timely arrival.
