China’s First Automobile Group and BYD Co., Ltd.’s joint venture, FAW Fredi New Energy Technology Co., Ltd., officially started production today in Changchun, Jilin Province. The project, located in Changchun Automobile Economic and Technological Development Zone, is the first new energy vehicle power battery strategic base in the northeastern region. FAW Fredi New Energy Technology Co., Ltd. was established on January 15, 2022, with a total area of 370,000 square meters and a construction area of 340,000 square meters. The project has a total investment of 18 billion yuan, with a planned production capacity of 45GWh in three phases, with 15GWh in each phase. The first batch of products will be used in the new Hongqi pure electric vehicles.
According to reports, the company will adopt BYD’s most advanced blade battery technology, combined with a design scheme of high integration without modules, claiming to perfectly balance the three major difficulties of power battery safety, high endurance, and long life. According to previous reports from IT Home, official data from FAW Hongqi showed that in January of this year, FAW Hongqi’s retail sales reached 40,300 vehicles, an increase of 82.9% year-on-year. The new pure electric models under the Hongqi brand – the Hongqi EH7 sedan and the Hongqi EHS7 SUV have also successively appeared in the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, both of which are mid-to-large size vehicles. However, the declaration information shows that both of these new vehicles use power batteries provided by CATL and FAW.
