On July 3, the long-awaited Xiaopeng MONA M03 made its global debut. Different from NIO’s sub-brand Leda, MONA opened another series under Xiaopeng, sparking discussions on appearance, intelligent driving, configuration, and potential ride-hailing services. During the live broadcast, Xiaopeng Motors Chairman and CEO He Xiaopeng, along with Vice President of Design Center Juanma Lopez, explained the design concept and story behind Xiaopeng MONA M03 to the public. This online event not only showcased the new car’s real appearance and design level but also explained why Xiaopeng chose to make this car. As the first model of the MONA series, Xiaopeng MONA M03 embodies Xiaopeng Motors’ new thinking on the electric market and user needs. He Xiaopeng believes that although the sub-200,000 RMB car market accounts for nearly half of the industry’s market share, mainstream A-class sedans have become the top choice for family users. However, there is still a lack of products that can meet the needs of young users – they do not want ordinary commuting tools or generic travel experiences, but fashionable items that combine appearance and technology, showcasing their individuality. This is what the A-class sedan market lacks and what Xiaopeng MONA M03 aims to provide.
He Xiaopeng expressed: “Xiaopeng is willing to spend a little more cost and time to create a ‘good-looking and interesting’ car for young people.” Therefore, Xiaopeng Motors spent nearly four years and invested over tens of billions to create China’s first intelligent pure electric coupe in the niche market – Xiaopeng MONA M03.
At the press conference, designer Juanma Lopez made his first public appearance after joining XPeng Motors, detailing the aesthetic elements of car design and the aesthetic genes of the XPeng MONA M03. The XPeng MONA M03 adopts a new AI quantified aesthetics, with an overall design style that combines “function and aesthetics”. In a coupe stance, the new car fully considers factors such as wind resistance, size, space, and function. In terms of body posture, the XPeng MONA M03 has a low center of gravity of 479mm, a length-to-height ratio of 3.31, a width-to-height ratio of 1.31, and a tire height ratio of 0.47.
The whole vehicle has a strong sense of technology, with the “010” digital starlight headlights at the front echoing the taillights. The headlight unit contains over 300 LED beads, combined with the sharp thick-walled light guide technology, making it very recognizable when lit up. In terms of dimensions, the new car measures 4780*1896*1445mm in length, width, and height respectively, with a wheelbase of 2815mm.
In terms of color, the Xiaopeng MONA M03 offers 5 options, including the already announced Starry Rice and Starry Blue, both low-saturation colors, visually pleasing.
In the press conference and pre-launch promotion, “low aerodynamic drag” is a key focus of this new car. The Xiaopeng MONA M03 integrates the concept of “low aerodynamic drag” into the manufacturing process from the design stage. The AGS fully integrated active grille shutter is standard across the range, with its irregular single-blade design seamlessly blending with the exterior styling. It can intelligently adjust opening and closing to balance aerodynamic optimization and electric drive cooling needs at different speeds. Thanks to a total of 15 low drag designs, the Xiaopeng MONA M03 achieves a drag coefficient of 0.194Cd, making it the world’s lowest aerodynamic drag mass-produced pure electric hatchback coupe. Energy consumption per 100 kilometers is reduced by 15%, and the maximum range can be increased by 60 km.
On the storage design front, the Xiaopeng MONA M03 comes standard with an electric liftgate, offering a spacious 621L trunk that can accommodate one 28-inch and four 20-inch suitcases. The 1136mm wide opening also makes it easier to load and unload items.
